First Data Bank Response Codes

The following list reflects all currently defined First Data bank response reason codes. All returned bank response codes other than ‘100’ indicate that a transaction did not succeed for some reason. Note: Response Reason Code ‘109’ indicates the transaction previously succeeded.

In general, codes values of ‘300’ or higher are Issuer/Association Declines, while those in the ‘200’ series are Rejects.

Note: Additional Decline and Reject Codes may be added at any time.

For the most common codes returned by First Data, the list includes an action field that suggests the best probable course of action to take based on the code returned. If you are receiving codes not listed here, please contact your Account Manager. The following KEY describes the Column Headings and the values appearing in the columns.
